Campaign Diary: Negative Ads Play as Positive as Independent Hits Mill Town

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

The Portland Press Herald published an article covering Eliot Cutler’s visit to Millinocket. Eliot met with workers at the Katahdin Paper Company and spoke with members of the Millinocket Rotary. Negative campaigning was a recurring theme for both Cutler and voters:

“‘I haven’t done any negative advertising. I won’t,’ Cutler told members of the Millinocket Rotary Club. ‘I think it’s an insult to the voters of the state of Maine.”
More often, voters are bringing up the issue first.
‘I was just talking about you down at the garage,’ Mike Bragdon said when he ran into Cutler during breakfast at the Appalachian Trail Cafe. ‘Thanks for not putting the negative ads on.”‘

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

MPBN aired a piece on Eliot Cutler’s “No Excuse” education policy. Cutler’s plan includes proposals to authorize public charter schools, reward teacher performance and lengthen the school year. Criticizing the Maine Education Association and Democratic legislators, including Democratic candidate Libby Mitchell, for their opposition to legislation authorizing charter schools, Cutler said:

“In the last Legislature, the Senate came very close to agreeing with the House to enact legislation to permit public charter schools. The teachers’ union in Maine, Libby Mitchell and the leadership of the Democratic party, locked arms and made sure that it didn’t pass the Senate”
